inWhen I was in Netherlands last week, I made it a point I must visit Schorem Haarsnijder En Barbier (basically, Schorem Barber) in Rotterdam.
Saw them in Facebook, they brought back memories when I was a kid, spending my time in my Dad’s barbershop. Yes, it is in my blood, the traditional barber culture. The prominent barber pole, the barber chair of the past, hot towels, straight razors, leather strops, manual hair clipper, and the most important, the barbers…
The barber is not just an occupation. It is an art by its trade, comprising hair-cutting and hot towel shaving skills which are essentials, and also the ability to strike up an interesting chat with the customers.
The history of barber goes back a long way. Traditionally, barbershop is also a place for men to socialise. Back then, men would visit barbershop not only for shaves or haircut, it was a weekly, if not daily affair for men to drop by their local barbershop to catch up and hang-out. The all-men atmosphere enabled them to share almost about anything – politic opinions, jokes, music, cigars, booze and most likelihood, last night’s fling with a neighbourhood girl…
A barber is often an interesting person, who always has got an interesting story to tell or an intriguing topic, resulting in an enjoyable time in the shop. Everyone will have a good time with the conversations, including those waiting on the bench.
That is what I have saw in Schorem Haarsnijder en Barbier, Rotterdam.
Schorem Haarsnijder en Barbier is a men only old school barbershop specialized in traditional haircuts and hot towel straight razor shaves. More information and pictures can be found on their website http://schorembarbier.nl/
As strictly as possible, ladies are out of bound in Schorem Haarsnijder en Barbier. Pretty offending rule to ladies, but deep down a man’s heart, I was really thrilled by the rule…
Working enviroment in traditional theme barbershop.
Historically, barbers were consider barber-surgeon in medievel Europe. They are trained in medical surgery, thus the white coat as traditional uniform.
In the past, barbers are also in charge of blood-letting, a practice which was believed to be releasing the illness with the blood. White bandages were used during the process of blood-letting, and hung dry on a pole outside. Staining red on white bandages, it becomes what we know today as Barber Pole.
